Two Nights of Gypsy Jazz

Tonight, February 21st, is the second night and features the FANTASTIC FIDDLES! Genre-defying classical violin star, Gilles Apap, and Tim go head-to-head in a repertoire spanning Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, bluegrass, gypsy jazz, Hungarian and Rumanian gypsy music and of course some improvised J.S.Bach! A journey around the world in 80 minutes.

Musicians

Gilles Apap, violin star; Eric Zivian, piano; Tim Kliphuis, gypsy jazz violin; Jimmy Grant, gypsy jazz guitar

Violin virtuoso Gilles Apap, protégé and friend of legendary Yehudi Menuhin, is known for his unique approach to music. He started life as a classical soloist performing with the Symphony orchestras of San Francisco, Leipzig and Russia, but soon formed his own bands, to fuse Balkan and American fiddling (the Transylvanian Mountain Boys), or classical with traditional folk (The Colours of Invention). He moves effortlessly between styles, sings and whistles, anything that he deems necessary to create a bond with the audience!

Eric Zivian is an outstanding pianist and composer, whose compositions have been performed in the US and Japan by amongst others the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He loves chamber music and is most inspired during live performances. He has been a soloist with the Toronto Symphony and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.

Tim Kliphuis (Amsterdam) is an award-winning gypsy jazz legend following in the footsteps of French maestro Stéphane Grappelli.  His collaborations with gypsy guitarists Stochelo Rosenberg, Samson Schmitt and the guru of them all, Fapy Lafertin, led to recordings and tours all over the world.

Jimmy Grant (LA) is America’s rising star of gypsy jazz guitar, and has collaborated with European gypsy guitarist Paulus Schäfer, accordionist Ludovic Beier, mandolinist David Grisman, with successful crossover group Velvet Caravan and the St Louis Symphony Orchestra.
