Don Stiernberg, jazz mandolin legend; Evan Price, jazz violin; Tim Kliphuis, gypsy jazz violin; Jimmy Grant, gypsy jazz guitar; Simon Planting, double bass.
Tim Kliphuis (Amsterdam) is an award-winning gypsy jazz legend following in the footsteps of French maestro Stéphane Grappelli. His collaborations with gypsy guitarists Stochelo Rosenberg, Samson Schmitt and the guru of them all, Fapy Lafertin, led to recordings and tours all over the world.
Don Stiernberg (Chicago) is the nation’s top jazz mandolinist, with a career spanning 50 years. The favourite student of mandolin pioneer Jethro Burns, Don was in Jethro's Grammy Award-winning Quartet for 7 years and was featured on the PBS Special “Jethro and Friends” together with Chet Atkins. As a bandleader, he collaborated with Sam Bush, David Grisman, and jazz singer Judy Roberts. And he played the mandolin at Carnegie Hall with the Chicago Symphony and Ricardo Muti on Verdi’s “Othello”!
Evan Price (Mill Valley) toured with string pioneers the Turtle Island Quartet for many years, before pursuing a solo career that saw him perform his own music with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. Nowadays, you can catch Evan swinging hard with the Hot Club of San Francisco!
Jimmy Grant (LA) is America’s rising star of gypsy jazz guitar, and has collaborated with European gypsy guitarist Paulus Schäfer, accordionist Ludovic Beier, mandolinist David Grisman, with succesful crossover group Velvet Caravan and the St Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Simon Planting (Amsterdam) is the go-to bass player for gypsy jazz in the nation. Born and raised in The Netherlands, he played in the bands of gypsy guitarist Fapy Lafertin and Jimmy Rosenberg for many years. Since then, he lives and works in America and is the artistic director of the Djangofests.
