Suki Hill was a professional photographer who lived in the town of Mill Valley, California for 46 years. Suki photographed subjects ranging from the streets of Paris to portraits of Rockstars, authors, painters, musicians, and the rich and the famous, but her favorite subject, the people of her community. Their celebrations, events, gatherings, work and in short their lives.
Suki lived life with rare skill and deep heartfeltness. She practiced her art with those same gifts and bridged the gap between the two with an extraordinary passion and sense of connection. Her photographic imagery reflected the love she felt for people, her community and the world, the arts, music being a large part of that passion. She knew how to bring life into art and art into life.
These images and experiences of some of the most renowned rock ‘n’ roll musicians that she got to photograph in the mid 60s as a young photographer finding her niche. And that she did at iconic shows and festivals like Monterey Pop Festival, The Fillmore and our own Mount Tam Theater with the KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Festival.
She had a magnetic way of drawing people in and making them feel open and comfortable in her presence, and for that she captured a soulfulness in her subjects.
These images were and are a huge part of Suki’s body of work and haven’t been exhibited for over 10 years. She loved and was so proud of all of these experiences and thanks to Throckmorton theater for hosting her wonderful work.
In 2007 Suki was pleased to receive a Milley award which honors local citizens who have contributed substantially to the character in fabric of Mill Valley.
She was the author of Mill Valley Then and Now in which she has paired historic photograph scenes from Mill Valley with her contemporary photograph shot from the same vantage points.
