DECEMBER ART EXHIBIT

katya mcculloch: natural curiosities

Artist Statement

I am awed by the power of life’s urge to live —despite our human selves. My original prints are hand-carved and hand-printed linoleum or woodcuts using high quality archival papers and inks. Artmaking is my way to make sense of the world and ponder connections with nature. My process is a dialogue with give and response that spirals to a fleeting moment of clarity.

Artist Bio

Katya McCulloch is a community artist whose work is exhibited internationally and in private and public collections including the Library of Congress, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and Emory University, among other special collection libraries.  She she has an MFA in Printmaking from San Francisco Art Institute, with BA in Studio Art & German Language and Literature from UC Berkeley.

Katya believes strongly that art is not just a profession, but a universal human need that marks our humanity. She has taught printmaking at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center through the William James Association Prison Arts Project since 2004. As Director of TeamWorks Art Mentoring Program, she has made art with historically marginalized and justice system involved youth in Marin County for 26 years. She is passionate about collaborative murals and has created public art in a wide variety of unconventional settings: Music Outback Foundation “MobFest” (Australia 2008-12), Marin County Fair “Public Art Days” (2000-2008), Italian Street Painting Festival (2001-2003), and in community settings and continuation schools throughout Marin.
