KAY RUSSELL ARTIST STATEMENT

Rocks/ Water/ Reverie

My paintings have always been a composite of recollections combined with evolving observations of the familiar. Subjects have ranged from landscapes, to rain, to cherished family objects. In recent years the landscape paintings have enticed me into closer observation of rocks, water and reflection which have led me to revisit and focus on selected, sacred locations. Locations represented are Salmon Lake and Sand Pond in the Sierra Buttes, Salt Point on the Northern California coast, and Cedar Point Ranch near Yosemite. The paintings are connected by family visits and observations made of each location over time. Also, the subjects have great appeal to my love of color and texture. The images form narrative reveries which hold a special place in my history and my heart, past to present.  All are united by a common presence of being anytime, anywhere.

All the paintings share my representational and interpretive process. They are primarily watercolor, and gouache, with occasional additions of metallic pigment, monotype paper, collage, and thread.  Printed papers are used under a painting or as part of a border, and are added by hand sewing, to embellish the main image.  Together images and techniques  create the narrative.
