June 16th: EOS Ensemble featuring SF Opera Baritone Timothy Murray
The Eos Ensemble founded by violinist Craig Reiss, is an exciting chamber music group comprised mainly of members of the San Francisco Opera orchestra. This concert will present a program of musical portraits of the natural world. Barber’s setting of Mattew Arnold’s poem “Dover Beach” evokes the waves on the ocean and the reflection of the moon on the water. Schubert is famous for his depictions of nature in his Lieder and the selections today depict the rippling river, a violent winter storm and a capricious trout darting to and fro in a clear brook. Ravel’s well known String Quartet uses musical “impressionism” to evoke many possibilities to the listener, perhaps a sunrise in the opening theme, or fierce gusts of wind in the finale.
